"We will all be married more than once.
Some of us even to the same person."

— Esther Perel

Couples and Family Therapy with Dr. Assael Romanelli

Couples Therapy

Sex, communication, distance, recurring arguments, value clashes, infidelity, secrets. Or just the feeling that something is missing and neither of you knows how to name it. All of these are good reasons to come in.

Here is the reframe: if your current relationship has stopped working, that is actually good news. Because we will all marry more than once. The only question is whether it will be with the same person.

I help couples prepare for their next marriage, hopefully with each other. I will help you become the partner you want to be, so you can be worthy of the relationship you want.

Together we figure out what is actually happening. We work in the present moment, look at the patterns in the room right now, and start building new ones. I don't just listen. I reflect what I see. I challenge what needs challenging. I teach real skills you can use between sessions.

My approach is direct. I will block your exits. The goal is for both of you to grow, whether you stay together or not

How We Start: The Honest Intake

We begin with a 90-minute session. By the end I will tell you exactly what I see: your patterns, your strengths, where you are stuck, and what needs to change. I will also give you videos and articles you can start using immediately. Then you decide if you want to continue. You are in the driver's seat.

I developed this protocol over 20 years of working with couples. It is not a standard intake form. It is a real first look at your relationship, together.

What to Expect

Therapy is meant to end. This is focused work, not a place to come every week forever.

I teach, not just listen. Every session includes real tools you can use between appointments.

Therapy is what happens between sessions. We have over 120 videos and 100 articles that I will tailor to your needs, so you can make real practical change in your daily life.

I measure you by your feet, not your mouth. Progress is how you choose to speak and behave, not just insight.

You set the pace. At the end of each session we schedule the next one together. You own the process.

Online via Zoom, or in person in Cherry Hill, NJ
Available Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 6:15 PM EST. Fridays 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Family Therapy

"All happy families resemble one another; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." — Leo Tolstoy

Every family has a dance. A pattern of roles, rules, and reactions that developed over time. Sooner or later, the dance will stop working and nobody knows how to change it. Communication, illness, money, divorce, family conflict, cutoff. I have seen and been through it all.

In family therapy we look at the whole system. We bring what is not being said out into the open. We figure out what is actually driving the dynamic. And then we build new ways of being together that actually work.

I help families with older children meet in the truth. I will help you listen with your heart and speak your truth. Because if you do not talk about it, you will act it out, and your children will replicate it.

I have been in family therapy with my own parents for over two years. I know firsthand the challenges and the rewards of this work.

The benefit of intergenerational family therapy is a relational legacy that heals the people in the room and spares the next generation from unnecessary pain. When families come together and stay in the heat, they experience healing, openness, and a natural evolution to the next stage of the life cycle.

Families that dare to meet in the truth come out stronger and closer. The only requirement is that you show up honestly and are willing to do the work.

What to Expect

We start with a 90-minute session for 2 to 3 members, or 2 hours for larger groups. By the end I will reflect what I see: the roles, the patterns, where people are stuck, and a direction forward. I will also give each person specific videos and articles to start changing behavior right away. Family therapy should be practical. The goal is to leave with tools you can actually use, not to keep coming to therapy forever

Questions People Ask

What is the Honest Intake?

It is a 90-minute first session where Assael gives you a full picture of your relational dynamic: your strengths, your patterns, what is actually driving the conflict. The Honest Intake protocol was developed over 10 years and is original, sharp and effective. By the end you know what needs to change and have a direction. You also leave with tailored videos and articles you can apply that same week. Then you decide if you want to continue.

Do you take insurance?

Assael is out of network. He provides a superbill after each session so you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Many clients get partial reimbursement this way.

What is the difference between therapy and the Remarriage Roadmap?

Therapy is clinical work with Assael, tailored to your specific situation. The Remarriage Roadmap is a structured 12-week online program with curriculum, exercises, and live couples coaching. Some couples do both. Others start with one and move to the other. Both help couples stop repeating the same patterns and build a marriage they actually want.

Do you work with couples outside New Jersey?

Yes. All sessions are online via Zoom. Assael is licensed in New Jersey and works with couples from all over the world as a relationship coach.
